Peter Orne has more than 15 years of experience as an education and technology communications specialist, world-affairs editor, and development journalist focused on challenges of social, economic, and educational development confronting underserved communities in the United States and overseas.
As Dissemination Director for the Regional Educational Laboratory Northeast and Islands, funded by the Institute of Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education, he leads a team producing professional-development events, creating materials, and developing technical capacities to support the bridge between rigorous education research, practice, and policymaking.
As Communications Director for the Learning and Teaching Division from 2010 to 2012, he built an infrastructure to increase the internal and external communications capacities of EDC's domestic education division and raise the visibility of its senior staff to a national audience of funders, partners, policymakers, and practitioners.
Orne is editor of The Wireless Internet Opportunity for Developing Countries and The Promise of Broadband Wireless Communities. He is author of “Digital Community Best Practices,” numerous articles for Wireless Government Report and The WorldPaper, and No More Messiahs: Latin America, Free Trade, and the Integration Landscape, among other white papers.
Before joining EDC, he was Editorial Director for the Wireless Internet Institute, the Digital Cities Convention, and Digital Inclusion Forum; Managing Editor of The WorldPaper; and Production Editor at Annual Reviews. In 1999, he was U.N.-accredited election observer in East Timor.
Orne received a BA from Wesleyan University and an MJ from the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California at Berkeley.
